Jamela’s Dress by Niki Daly

There are  five books about Jamela who lives with her mother, her grandmother and her dog, Taxi, in a busy town in South Africa. She means well but is always getting into scrapes. In the first book, ‘Jamela’s Dress’, her mother spends some of her hard earned money on beautiful fabric to make into a dress for a friend’s wedding.

After washing the fabric, Jamela is entrusted with the task of keeping an eye on it while it dries. She tries to take this seriously but drifts off and finds herself in a daydream. She struts down the busy street draped in the fabric, meeting all the characters round town. A local photographer even documents her exploits.

Reality hits home hard when her mother finds out what she has done. The fabric is ruined.

But a friend helps out, a happy solution is found in the end and everyone is well turned out for the wedding.
