The Quiet in the Land: Luang Prabang, Laos.

The Quiet in the Land: Luang Prabang, Laos.

The Quiet in the Land is a nonprofit art and education organization founded and directed by the independent curator France Morin. It organizes projects in the form of long-term collaborations between artists and communities that are deeply rooted in the rhythms of everyday life. These projects demonstrate how an artist’s gift to open up new ways of seeing, to forge connections between persons from diverse backgrounds, and to inspire positive change might contribute to the process of reconsidering the potential of contemporary art as a socially grounded practice.

This publication documents a series of innovative community-based art projects by Marina Abramović, Janine Antoni, Hans Georg Berger, Cai Guo-Qiang, Ann Hamilton, Manivong Khattiyarat, Dinh Q. Lê, Shirin Neshat, Jun Nguyen-Hatsushiba, Vong Phaophanit, Allan Sekula, Shahzia Sikander, Nithakhong Somsanith, and Rirkrit Tiravanija realized in Luang Prabang, Laos, from 2004 to 2008 for The Quiet in the Land.

Essays by France Morin, John Alan Farmer, Francis Engelmann, Carol Becker, Somsanouk Mixay, and Catherine Choron-Baix.
