Azzi In Between is a graphic novel that follows a young girl, Azzi, and her parents as they escape their war-torn country.
Their journey has them driving through the night, encountering border guards and travelling across the sea in a small boat.
They arrive at their destination relieved but overwhelmed by how different everything is. We see her father demoralised by not be able to work and her mother’s concerns that, in learning English, Azzi might forget her own language. But we also see some of the kindness the family encounters and how, in time, they begin to settle in their new home.
Neither their home country or new country are specified by name allowing the story to be about any family forced to flee their homeland. Sarah Garland took advice from specialists in immigration law and human rights as well as teachers working with refugee children in UK schools when writing the book in order that the story could be as accurate as possibly. The full horrors of war are not explicitly described but some of the emotional loss is. Nevertheless, this is a moving tale of hope and courage.
